Learner Support & Wellbeing

Our Commitment to Learner Support & Wellbeing

At Unique Academy of Hair & Beauty, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where all learners can thrive. Guided by the principles of the NZQA, the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we prioritise the wellbeing, safety, and success of every student.

We recognise the diverse backgrounds and aspirations of our learners and are dedicated to upholding manaakitanga (care and respect), whanaungatanga (relationships and belonging), and kotahitanga (unity and inclusion) in all that we do. We ensure that the wellbeing and safety of both domestic and international learners is prioritised through strong pastoral support, clear communication, respectful relationships, and responsive wellbeing systems. Our dedicated team works collaboratively with learners, whānau, and community to empower success and build a positive, learner-centred experience.

We support learners’ physical, emotional, cultural, and academic needs—ensuring they feel valued, empowered, and equipped for success in both their studies and the wider hair and beauty industry.

Physical Wellbeing

Our learners can join any Jetts Gym at discounted rates through collaboration between the academy and Jetts.

Mental Wellbeing

The link provided is for mental health services  for all learners https://mentalhealth.org.nz/helplines. There are also continuous classroom checkins by teaching staff.  Quarterly surveys and feedback will provide and highlight any concerns or potential concerns that need following up.

Social Wellbeing

There are social media platforms available for learners to access. There is a social get together, to celebrate the end of term, for all learners, teachers and staff.

Code of Practice

It is very important for learners to know their code and rights regarding their support, learning and wellbeing.  For more information see flyer enclosed “#Knowthecode” or visit www.nzqa.govt.nz/know-the-code

Cultural Awareness

We provide academic and wellbeing support that is also culturally sensitive and responsive to all learners particularly those learners who are Māori and Pasifika.

We have an open-door policy where any member of staff can be approached and they will listen, offer support and guidance to the appropriate services.  All these interactions will be kept in confidence, with only serious threat to life, self-harm and mental vulnerability being reported to management.
